Natural Stone care and Cleaning

Natural Stone Care and Cleaning

DAILY MAINTENANCE

The easiest way to keep your natural stone looking great is to avoid the bad habits that may damage it in the first place.

  • Blot up spills immediately
  • Clean surfaces using hot water and a sponge or soft cloth
  • When necessary, use a specially formulated natural stone cleaner
  • Use coasters under all glasses, bottles and cans
  • Use trivets under pots and pans
  • Use cutting boards

SEALING

  • Drip a puddle of water on your countertop, note the time and observe:
    • If the puddle darkens quickly then sealing granite countertops is required, multiple coats annually
    • If it takes 4 or 5 minutes to darken then a few coats of a good sealer should be applied, re-sealing every 3-5 years
    • If it darkens in 10 to 15 minutes then apply a sealer, only one coat with many years between applications
    • If the puddle doesn't darken or takes 30 minutes or longer then sealing is not necessary
  • Choose only high quality natural stone sealers
  • Sealing will not prevent etching or scratching

AVOID

  • Don't use generic cleaning products or common household cleaners
  • Don't use vinegar, ammonia, lemon or orange as cleaners
  • Don't sit or stand on your countertops
  • Don't store liquids or toiletry products directly on your countertop surfa
